By practicing self-care, compassion and grace, you’ll be able to give back to yourself so you can be more present in everything you do.
According to Merriam Webster, self-love means appreciating your worth. It involves caring for your own happiness and well-being.
When I first looked up this definition, I let out a sigh of relief. Maybe I don’t have to feel guilty for the times I prioritize self-care over productivity. But as I kept reading, I saw words like “narcissism”, “conceit” and “selfishness” on the page. For me, the conflicting definitions of self-love are confusing and frustrating — reflecting the real-life struggle of the practice.
My journey practicing self-love hasn’t always been an easy one (and there are still days when it isn’t easy). There are days when self-doubt creeps in. There are days when I am so busy, I forget to take care of myself. Over time, I start to feel depleted if I don’t take the time to be kind to myself and fill up my own cup.
What are some ways to practice self-love?
These tips have helped me cultivate compassion for myself, even during busy and challenging times.
1. Take time for self-care.
Self-care is not selfish, it is essential. Take dance breaks, go for a walk, eat a nourishing meal or roll out your yoga mat. You can follow along to this YouTube video for poses that release tension and open your heart.
2. Balance your to-do list with things that light up your soul and fill you with joy.
Explore your passions, learn a new skill, or spend time with loved ones. Set aside time for the activities that make you feel refreshed, connected and happy.
3. Leave space to unwind at the end of the day.
Put away your phone and unplug from social media. Doom-scrolling on social media can lead to comparing yourself to others, rather than focusing inward. Instead, draw a warm bath, read a book, journal or meditate.
4. Recognize the beauty, wisdom and power in yourself.
When you accomplish a goal, acknowledge and appreciate it before moving onto the next task. Give yourself the same kindness and respect you give to your loved ones.
5. Give yourself grace when life gets hard.
Share the burden by asking for help. Rest when you need it and prioritize getting a good night’s sleep. Likely, there are some tasks that can wait and you’ll have more energy and clarity to accomplish them when you’re ready.
Remember, every exchange throughout the day requires an output of energy. Give back to yourself as much as you give to others. Celebrate your wins and on the hard days, be gentle with yourself. You’ve got this.
With kindness and love,
Shannon
